Managing Director, Vice-Chair Investment Banking Middle East & Africa, Citi

In 2013 Miguel became Head of Investment Banking Africa (exc. SA & Egypt). In 2018 Miguel was appointed Head of Investment Banking for Middle East & Africa (ex-SA) and in 2023 became Vice – Chair of Investment Banking for Middle East & Africa.

Prior to working at Citigroup, Miguel was a Senior Country Advisor for Bank of America Merrill Lynch and an Executive Director at Goldman Sachs. Miguel has an MBA in Finance
from City University Business School in London and a BSc in Economics from Nova School of Business and Economics in Lisbon.

In the M&A space, Miguel has a long career of over 25 years, advising multi-billion transactions in 4 continents, starting in his native Portugal and across Europe, in Brazil,
across Africa and more recently supporting Middle East based clients.

In the Debt Capital Markets space, Miguel was a pioneer in advising debut issuers, both Sovereign and Corporates, from Africa tapping into the global bond markets.
In the Equity Capital Markets space, Miguel and the Citi team have been pioneers and the clear leaders in the Middle East and Africa regions leading more equity offerings than any other global investment bank.

According to Euromoney, Citi’s team was best Advisory Bank and/or Investment Bank in Africa (2020/23), UAE (2021/22/23) and Middle East (2020/21/23).

Miguel is a regular contributor to FT, CNBC and Bloomberg TV as well as a regular speaker in regional events, including Africa Business Forum (Dubai), Investopia (Dubai), Qatar Economic Forum (Doha), World Economic Forum (Africa and Middle East) and Milken Institute (US, UK and Middle East) amongst others.

In 2023, during the Africa Development Bank Annual Summit, Miguel received, from the African Banker magazine, the career recognition award of Africa Icon Banker. He is a member of the Portuguese Diaspora Council since 2018.
