General Information on Djibouti

With an area of approximately 23,669 km², the Republic of Djibouti is located on the borders of Africa and Asia, at the southern end of the Red Sea with an outlet to the Gulf of Aden. It is located at the Horn of Africa and shares its land borders with Somalia to the south, Ethiopia to the southwest and Eritrea to the north.

The east of the country is occupied by the Red Sea. Djibouti has 372 km of coastline and a maritime area of approximately 7,200 km2. Located on one of the most traveled sea routes in the world, the Republic of Djibouti benefits from an indisputable geostrategic position at the crossroads of three rifts. Its relief is largely made up of volcanic rocks and subject to significant tectonic activity, drought and occasional cyclonic disturbances from the Indian Ocean.

In the sub-region, the Republic of Djibouti is at the crossroads of the Arab world, Asia and Africa; which gives it a leading strategic role. This role of liaison between the African continent and the countries of the Arabian Peninsula is also reinforced by the country's membership in regional bodies such as the Arab League, IGAD and COMESA.
